Minecraft world generation usually takes place while a player is playing on it, causing lag and increased server resource usage on multiplayer servers, where several players are playing on different regions of the world. To solve this issue, server owners can pre-generate their world to an extent with a plugin/mod called Chunky, i.e. available on multiple server versions like - Sponge, Spigot, Paper, Forge, and many others. This plugin/mod is very useful in servers having fewer resources and can contribute to reducing server lag and giving the players a lag-free experience while playing.

Following that, installing Chunky and implementing it on your server is relatively easy and requires little to no experience. If you follow every step of this guide correctly, you will have a pre-generated world on your server before the end of this guide.

What is Chunky

Chunky is a multi-purpose plugin/mod that lets the server owners pre-generate a specific part of their world before starting their server. This causes less resource usage and a lag-free experience while playing, as the server doesn’t have to load its world after the players join it.

Installing Chunky

Before getting started, make sure that you are using the correct version of Chunky for your server, as each server version (Example - PaperMC, Forge, Spigot, etc.) only lets a specific version of the plugin/mod work on it. To avoid this, we recommend installing Chunky from the Modrinth marketplace, which lets you choose the version of the plugin/mod according to your server software.

1. Go to the Chunky’s plugin page on Modrinth and download the correct version for your server.

2. On downloading that, login to your MCServerHost dashboard and stop your server to avoid any errors while installing the plugin/mod.

3. Head towards the file manager and install the plugin/mod to the ‘plugins’ or ‘mods’ folder of your server, depending on what server version (Example - PaperMC, Forge, and others) you are using.

4. After successfully installing the plugin/mod. Restart your server in order to let Chunky create its configuration files on the server.

5. On restarting your server, head over to the console and use the commands given below in a numerical manner -

1. chunky world world - This sets the target to the overworld of your server. If you want to pre-generate the nether or the end dimension of your server, you can simply use the command ‘chunky world [world name]’ to put the target on another world of your server, i.e. either the nether or the end.
2. chunky center 0 0 - This sets the center of your world border to be on the center of your targeted world, i.e. on 0, 0, 0.
3. chunky radius 5000 - This sets the radius of your world border to be 5000 blocks away from the center. If you are looking to increase the number of blocks, you can simply use the command ‘chunky radius [number of blocks]’.
4. chunky start - This command will start the world pre-generation process.

6. After performing all the necessary commands, Chunky will start pre-generating your server world.

Commands & Permissions

In order to view the commands and permissions of this plugin/mod, we suggest you to visit its Modrinth download page and have a look at its description on https://modrinth.com/plugin/chunky

Similarly, some common commands that you can use include -

1. chunky stop - Stops the entire pre-generation process
2. chunky pause - Pauses the pre-generation process
3. chunky continue - Start the paused pre-generation process

Common Mistakes

1. Storage - Keep in mind that pre-generating your Minecraft world takes a lot of storage. If you are looking to pre-generate 6000 blocks, then it will probably take around 6GB of your server storage. To calculate how much storage it would take to pre-generate certain blocks, you can check out a world size calculator at https://onlinemo.de/world.

2. Pre-generation Duration - After you start your pre-generation, it can take up to a day in order to pre-generate the world, depending on the size of the pre-generation.

3. Spammy Console - After starting your world pre-generation, your console can get quite spammy from the progress messages. To stop them, you can simply use the command - chunky silent

Conclusion

After reading this entire guide, you will be able to pre-generate your world using Chunky. Keep in mind, the time it requires to pre-generate can take anywhere from a day to a week depending on the number of blocks that you are pre-generating. Also, don't forget that it takes a lot of storage to pre-generate your world, so if you are short on resources, make sure to only pre-generate a small amount of blocks, and you are all good to go.
