Now that you’ve set up most of your server following our guides, everything should be running fine… But wait, why can players use admin commands?! Why do they have access to commands they definitely shouldn’t?! Guess what?! You forgot to set up permissions. That's where LuckPerms comes in! Without a proper ranking and permission system, your server is more of a lawless country. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to set up LuckPerms so you can keep the powers in the right hands.
It is a permission plugin that allows you to create ranks and assign specific permissions to players. For example, if you want to give moderators access to moderation commands and exclusive perks to server supporters, LuckPerms makes this effortless. With Luckperms, you can also add chat prefixes to certain ranks or users, making them stand out and giving your server a more organized feel.
Before starting, we recommend you install the correct version of LuckPerms for your Minecraft Server from their download page at https://luckperms.net/download/ according to your server version (Bukkit, Fabric, Sponge, etc.) and requirements.
1. Log in to your MCServerHost dashboard, and stop your server in order to avoid any type of error while installing the plugins into your server.
2. Go to the file manager, install the LuckPerms plugin into your ‘plugins’ folder, and restart your server in order to let it create its configuration file on the server.
3. On restarting, the plugin will create its configuration file in the 'plugins' folder and start functioning.
On successfully installing LuckPerms on your server, now it's time to configure it according to your liking. To do that, follow the steps below—
1. To start, type the command ‘lp editor’ on your server console in order to get a unique link that will redirect you to your server's web configuration page.
2. To start creating ranks, click on the plus sign (+) next to the 'GROUPS' options on the sidebar, and a popup will appear presenting you with multiple fields like group name, display name, weight, and many others. Below you can view a summary of what each field is used to represent.
- Group Name – The unique identifier for the group (e.g., moderator, admin).
- Weight – Determines the hierarchy; higher values mean higher priority.
- Display name – The formatted name shown in menus and lists.
- Prefix – A text prefix (e.g., [Mod]) displayed before a player's name.
- Parent – Sets another group as a "parent," inheriting its permissions.
- Suffix – A text suffix displayed after a player's name.
Note – To allow all the functions to work properly, you will need to install Vault on your Minecraft Server.
3. On creating all the required groups for your server, you can start assigning them permissions in order to let them use different commands and features. To do that, go to your newly created group and start adding permissions to it.
4. After assigning all the required permissions, click on the Add (+) option in order to add them to your server. Also, keep in mind that every plugin/mod installed on your server has its own respective permissions, so make sure you assign them accordingly.
5. Click the 'Save' option present on the top right corner to save the changes. After saving, the editor will present you with a unique command that you can use on your server console to apply all the changes to your server.
By default, LuckPerms assigns the 'default' group to new players who join your server. To change groups, you can use the command 'lp user <username> parent add <group>' on your server console or in-game. To know more about LuckPerms, we recommend you visit its wiki at https://luckperms.net/wiki/Home
And that's it! No more players running unauthorized commands or bypassing restrictions; your server now has a proper ranking system in place. With Luckperms, managing ranks, permissions, and players is easier than ever. Now go ahead and finely configure your server, and enjoy a well-organized ranking system.
